In Malaysian folklore, Vanara refers to a group of Gods who are inquisitive and yet very brave in character. Reputed to possess supernatural powers, the Vanara gods can also change their shapes or appearance easily.
Inspired by their stories of bravery and their great courage, the Vanara gods are worshipped by the Malaysians in hope of gaining courage themselves.
At the beginning of the New Year, the local international kindergarten is going to hold a drama festival. Children from different national backgrounds are selected to participate in this drama. Each child selected is expected to dress up in their distinct national costumes; each costume with their different national aesthetics, distinct religious colors and to represent their unique national backgrounds.
Selected for this drama presentation, Mia decides to portray Vanara – the Guardian of Courage, who is known to spread bravery and courage to everybody.
To honor her father’s Malaysian heritage, Mia had on a Malaysian outfit – a combination starting with a blouse with antique-looking delicately embroidered butterflies; shorts with vintage traditional prints, a dark green checker jacket, and a matching hat.
Accompanying Mia is a special and unique puppet – a modified traditional Malaysian shadow puppet with the face of the God of Vanara.
