Born with a fragile body, young Miki was often ill and was regularly bedridden when she was a toddler.
Conscious of her birth deficiencies, Miki’s family members pitied Miki; and often cossetted Miki by abiding to young Miki’s every wishes whenever they could. Apparently, everyone wanted to see young Miki smile instead of being miserable in bed.
Unfortunately, this had also led Miki to become a little spoiled and over-pampered.
to do something special for young Miki, on one Children’s Day, years ago, and after much effort, Miki’s parents finally managed to obtain a rare fortune doll from a distant sen-sha (shrine). By placing the blessed fortune doll into their living room display table, it was with hopes that the blessed doll could somehow help repel misfortune and sickness from the household; and maybe help young Miki back to become a healthy and normal young girl.
Soon afterward, on one moonless night, when everyone in the household was asleep, young Miki, feeling a little better, managed to get up from her bed to walk around the house by herself.
In the living room, young Miki immediately spotted the fortune doll. Intrigued, she picked up the doll and started to play with it. Carrying the fortune doll in hand, Miki ran around the living room floor while flying the fortune doll like an airplane in circles, with her mouth making whooshing sounds as it flew.
Like other toys before, it wasn’t long, however, when young Miki became bored with the doll.
Instead of placing the fortune doll back on top of the living room table, where it came from, Miki threw it hard onto the floor.
Untidy in nature, and with no grown-up supervision otherwise, the house was already clattered with other toys scattered everywhere by Miki before. Now the fortune doll seems to be destined to become one of the many toys that were thrown to the ground by Miki.
Suddenly, the room lights dimmed.
And miraculously, according to Miki’s own recollection and recounted to her parents later; the fortune doll seemed to have bolted up from the floor and flung itself onto Miki’s face. In doing so, the fortune doll even landed a punch right on Miki’s forehead.
Alone and hurt, astounded young Miki just stood there frightened, and started to cry.
With a stern posture that still intimidated little Miki; the short fortune doll, reaching only at Miki’s knee height, stood itself up on the floor firmly, next to Miki.
“Miki, the other toys and I have feelings too. And we do not appreciate being mistreated this way. Do you understand?” Reprimanded the fortune doll harshly. As the doll’s mouth did not move at all while speaking, these words seemed to emanate from the doll's body itself instead.
Petrified, all young Miki can do was to answer with a terrified nod of the head.
“Now, will you promise to clean up after yourself; and treat us more humanly from now on?” Demanded the fortune doll.
Still frightened, Miki gave another shuddering nod in response.
At that moment, the room lights suddenly lit up again and the doll fell flat on the ground in a lifeless state.
After this mystical but memorable solitary experience, young Miki did manage to keep her promise.
Miki did not only tidied up after she played with all the toys, she also managed somehow to stay out of bed; while studying hard and even helped her mother out with their daily chores.
Later Miki grew up to be a diligent girl, and coincidentally, she had not been sick since that memorable magical encounter.
In retrospect, the fortune doll did seem to have protected and nurtured young Miki.
