Little Sophie and her Mother were heading out for the day to buy Sophie some new school shoes. Sophie’s mother had chastised her for wearing out her old ones out so quickly, they couldn’t afford to buy new ones every year, after all. Arriving at the entrance of their fifth-floor walk-up, there was a huge crowd and accompanying commotion. Little Sophie could only see the legs of all the people jostling back and forth, they wore bright colors and chatted in a language Little Sophie didn’t understand.

Little Sophie’s family had just moved to an area called Chinatown in San Francisco. Chinatown was mostly populated by immigrants from places like Hong Kong and Guangdong. Sophie’s family had also just moved to the neighborhood in search of jobs and new opportunities. The rent in Chinatown was cheaper than pretty much the whole of the city, and Little Sophie’s family didn’t have much money to spare, and so they had settled here.

“Must be some kind of holiday” Sophie’s Mother intoned, as she pushed herself into the fray. Little Sophie did her best to keep up, holding onto two of her Mother’s fingers. Suddenly, the crowd began to part, separating Little Sophie and her mother. She began to chase after her Mother but was suddenly entranced by the cause of this coordinated rupture. An explosion of gold and red snaked through the busy street, twisting and shaking as it passed. Little Sophie stopped and stared at this strange and alien creature that was weaving through the neighborhood like an oil spill running down a river.

Then, she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder, “little girl, where is your mother?”, the stranger asked. Little Sophie realized that, while caught up in all the excitement, she had lost her. She started to sob. “Shh shhh, don’t be sad, tell me what she looks like, she will be found” the stranger reassured her. “My name is Cheok-Jin” she told her.

“What’s going on today? Why is everyone in the street?” Sophie asked her new friend. “It’s Chinese New Year, of course! The best day of the year!” Cheok-Jin replied. She explained that in China, they celebrate New Year in January or February, not at the end of December like they do in the West. She told Sophie that the strange creature was actually a giant costume puppeted by many people. This creature is supposed to resemble a Dragon, a mythical being that is a great symbol of power in China. Every year they perform the Dragon dance to bring luck and prosperity to the community. Everyone gets dressed up in their nicest clothes to watch the celebrations and gather with their family.

“Oh, that must be why you are dressed so beautifully…” Sophie murmured, admiring her friend’s exquisite garments “I wish I had something that beautiful to wear”. “Oh! Good idea! Let’s … what do you Americans say? … kill two birds with one stone!” Cheok-Jin exclaimed, pulling Little Sophie into a shop down the street.
The shop oozed with shimmering fabric and elegant dresses, Little Sophie had never seen anything like it. In the corner of the little store was a great hulking singer sewing machine that a small woman worked away on, tapping rhythmically at the peddles with her feet. After Cheok-Jin and the woman in the store had a brief but animated conversation Little Sophie didn’t understand, they both set to work. The shopkeeper began dialing the phone on the counter and Cheok-Jin started pulling things off the shelves. “Ok, go and try this on” Cheok-jin instructed, handing Little Sophie a colorful pile of clothing. “Really? Can I?” Little Sophie asked, she had never been given something so beautiful. “Yes, quickly!” Choek-Jin replied.

While the shopkeeper continued to dial numbers on the rotary phone at the back of the store, Little Sophie tried on the new clothes. Just as she finished putting them on, with some help from Cheok-Jin, the bell at the door rang. “Sophie?” a familiar voice chimed out from the doorway. “Mom!” Sophie replied, and ran out to hug her, “How did you find me?”. “Well, a woman in the market asked if I had lost my daughter, Sophie, and told me to find you at this address”.

While Little Sophie had been trying on her new outfit, the shopkeeper had been calling all the businesses in the area, asking them to look out for Little Sophie’s Mother. It took this efficient network almost no time to find her, and send her on the way. “This community looks after each other” Cheok-Jin explained. “Oh Sophie” stepping back, her Mother suddenly noticed her brand new outfit, “We can’t afford something like that!”. At this moment, the shopkeeper emerged from behind the counter, “Consider it a gift, a welcome to the neighborhood!”
The women invited Little Sophie’s family to join them in the rest of the New Year celebrations. The family had a wonderful holiday and the group remained firm friends, celebrating holidays from both the West and East together every year.
