Sophie’s grandfather and Ten Ping’s grandfather were brothers. Little Sophie’s family moved to the United States as refugees during the time of the Korean War and had ever since grown up in the United States. It was not until the late 1980s when Ten Ping and Sophie got to meet each other in a belated family gathering.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt was not easy for Little Sophie to grow up in the United States especially when their parents were not native English speakers. Nonetheless, since early childhood, Sophie’s mother had made sure to instill upon her some traditional human values by telling her many Chinese children’s stories; most of them carried moral messages.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBelow is a story of compassion; which Sophie recalled from her mother.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt was back in 1925, after another meaningless war between the local feudal warlords. And most of the vicinities in this northern China area were left in the wreckage with many people homeless and hungry.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGuo was a lonely widower farmer who had a modest house; with a few acres of farmland and fruit yards. Being located in a distant rural area, farmer Guo was fortunate enough that his land and house were not impacted by the fightings between the two armies of the warlords. And yet, due to the recent draughts; and the following pest attacks; farmer Guo, like his neighbors, could barely feed himself; even with possession of his farmland and fruit yards.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWorst yet, some war refugees had recently fled to Guo’s remote isolated village, and, hungry; many had been stealing fruits and crops from Guo’s field, and other fields nearby.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTo combat the threats, the villagers tried to seek the local authority, the warlord for help; but to no avail. As a result, the villagers had to reluctantly take up arms themselves against the refugees in protection; leading to many tragic casualties on both sides.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTensions mount.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eStill, the local warlord authorities did little, but to post a few guides around the village during the daytime; and withdraw them at sunset.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFarmer Guo was aware of the situation but refused to arm himself nor seek any outside assistance to protect his fields and fruit yards. Instead, he decided to deal with the thieves compassionately.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen the thieves sneaked in, during nighttime, to steal apples from Guo’s trees, farmer Guo just greeted them, offered some kind words, and gave them bags of already harvested crops and fruits to leave.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSuch kind deeds, unfortunately, did not stop the daily flow of hungry refugees. Again and again, the hungry thieves came raiding, in the nighttime, to steal fruits from the field. And again and again, farmer Guo confronted them; and sent the thieves away by giving them all his stocked fruits and stock grains; until there was none left.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSensing this, the hungry refugees still came back insistently, at night time.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe fact that all the fruit trees were now picked barren; and there were no more grains for farmer Guo to give away; did not stop the hungry refugees from raiding, in the night, for any or everything still edible.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThen one night, a trio, a mother and two little kids, finding nothing edible; turned to chop down the unripe rice crops from his rice paddies. Farmer Guo standing nearby did nothing but decided instead to hide amongst the rice fields so as not to startle the mother or embarrass the trio.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe next morning, when the fellow villagers asked Guo why he would condone such criminal behaviors, Guo simply shrugged and said, “First of all, these refugees did not steal out of greed, they did it because they were very hungry. And these refugees had been so weary of wars and unrests, that they are unwilling to settle down and farm for themselves because they believed that their finished labored crops would most likely be later looted by some war renegades or by some bandits.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLastly, I have more than enough for myself. Chinatown was mostly populated by immigrants from places like Hong Kong and Guangdong. Sophie’s family had also just moved to the neighborhood in search of jobs and new opportunities. The rent in Chinatown was cheaper than pretty much the whole of the city, and Little Sophie’s family didn’t have much money to spare, and so they had settled here.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Must be some kind of holiday” Sophie’s Mother intoned, as she pushed herself into the fray. Little Sophie did her best to keep up, holding onto two of her Mother’s fingers. Suddenly, the crowd began to part, separating Little Sophie and her mother. She began to chase after her Mother but was suddenly entranced by the cause of this coordinated rupture. An explosion of gold and red snaked through the busy street, twisting and shaking as it passed. Little Sophie stopped and stared at this strange and alien creature that was weaving through the neighborhood like an oil spill running down a river.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThen, she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder, “little girl, where is your mother?”, the stranger asked. Little Sophie realized that, while caught up in all the excitement, she had lost her. She started to sob. “Shh shhh, don’t be sad, tell me what she looks like, she will be found” the stranger reassured her. “My name is Cheok-Jin” she told her.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“What’s going on today? Why is everyone in the street?” Sophie asked her new friend. “It’s Chinese New Year, of course! The best day of the year!” Cheok-Jin replied. She explained that in China, they celebrate New Year in January or February, not at the end of December like they do in the West. She told Sophie that the strange creature was actually a giant costume puppeted by many people. This creature is supposed to resemble a Dragon, a mythical being that is a great symbol of power in China. Every year they perform the Dragon dance to bring luck and prosperity to the community. Everyone gets dressed up in their nicest clothes to watch the celebrations and gather with their family.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Oh, that must be why you are dressed so beautifully…” Sophie murmured, admiring her friend’s exquisite garments “I wish I had something that beautiful to wear”. “Oh! Good idea! Let’s … what do you Americans say? … kill two birds with one stone!” Cheok-Jin exclaimed, pulling Little Sophie into a shop down the street.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe shop oozed with shimmering fabric and elegant dresses, Little Sophie had never seen anything like it. In the corner of the little store was a great hulking singer sewing machine that a small woman worked away on, tapping rhythmically at the peddles with her feet. After Cheok-Jin and the woman in the store had a brief but animated conversation Little Sophie didn’t understand, they both set to work. The shopkeeper began dialing the phone on the counter and Cheok-Jin started pulling things off the shelves. “Ok, go and try this on” Cheok-jin instructed, handing Little Sophie a colorful pile of clothing. “Really? Can I?” Little Sophie asked, she had never been given something so beautiful. “Yes, quickly!” Choek-Jin replied.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile the shopkeeper continued to dial numbers on the rotary phone at the back of the store, Little Sophie tried on the new clothes. Just as she finished putting them on, with some help from Cheok-Jin, the bell at the door rang. “Sophie?” a familiar voice chimed out from the doorway. “Mom!” Sophie replied, and ran out to hug her, “How did you find me?”. “Well, a woman in the market asked if I had lost my daughter, Sophie, and told me to find you at this address”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile Little Sophie had been trying on her new outfit, the shopkeeper had been calling all the businesses in the area, asking them to look out for Little Sophie’s Mother. It took this efficient network almost no time to find her, and send her on the way. “This community looks after each other” Cheok-Jin explained. “Oh Sophie” stepping back, her Mother suddenly noticed her brand new outfit, “We can’t afford something like that!”. At this moment, the shopkeeper emerged from behind the counter, “Consider it a gift, a welcome to the neighborhood!”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe women invited Little Sophie’s family to join them in the rest of the New Year celebrations.
